Winter storm forces school closures in parts of Pomerania

Winter storm warnings remain in effect for much of the Maritimes as snowstorms force schools to close in parts of Nova Scotia and PEI.

Snowfall of up to 40 centimeters is expected in eastern Nova Scotia and Cape Breton, with wind gusts of up to 100 kilometers per hour, making travel dangerous.

Some government offices in Cape Breton were closed and about 6,000 homes and businesses were without power on the island and on the eastern mainland, mostly in Antigonish, Gaisborough and Sydney.

Up to 30cm of snow is expected across the island, with winds gusting up to 90km/h.

Meanwhile, winter storm warnings and snow warnings have been issued for much of eastern and northern New Brunswick, with the storm expected to bring 15 to 20 centimeters of snow starting later today.

Snow in New Brunswick will mix or turn to rain overnight, with strong winds producing blowing snow tonight.
