Ottawa –
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says his government is trying to draw a line between guns that are good for hunting and those that have no place in society because they pose a significant danger in the wrong hands.
In an interview with The Canadian Press, Trudeau said that while the effort has sparked divisions, society should figure out “where that line is.”
The government wants to tighten a May 2020 regulatory ban on a range of firearms it considers assault guns by including a sweeping definition in a bill being considered by the Commons public safety committee.
Trudeau said he intends to follow through on his pledge to outlaw guns designed to kill as many people as possible as quickly as possible.
But he acknowledged that more work needs to be done on refining the definition, as his minority government needs the support of at least one other party to secure passage of the measures.
The Public Safety Board plans to meet later today to discuss the proposal to hear witnesses, an idea floated by the Quebec Group’s Christine Michaud.
