You are listening to the Expresso Sports Update. Here is the latest news from the world of Indian and International Sports brought to you by The Indian Express.
“Let’s begin with some tennis news.
Felix Auger-Aliassime left Rafa Nadal’s title hopes at the ATP Finals in tatters as he beat the struggling Spaniard 6-3 6-4 in round-robin action at the Pala Alpitour Stadium on Tuesday, November 15.
Nadal needs to win the year-end title for the first time in his career to have a chance of preventing compatriot Carlos Alcaraz from ending the year as world number one, but he faded badly after an encouraging start.
The second-ranked 36-year-old was beaten by American Taylor Fritz in his opener on Sunday and is bottom of the Green Group with one match remaining against Norway’s Casper Ruud.
Nadal, the record 22-times Grand Slam champion, has now lost four successive ATP Tour matches for the first time since 2009.”
“In some cricket news,
With the Indian Premier League mini auction slated on November 23 in Kochi, the 10 franchises have released a list of players who they will retain while the released players will go under the hammer.
Chennai Kings have released long-serving player Dwayne Bravo while Sunrisers Hyderabad has let go of their captain Kane Williamson on Monday, November 14.
The day started with Mumbai Indians’ longstanding West Indian all-rounder Kieron Pollard announcing his retirement from the IPL, only to be drafted as the five-time champions’ batting coach.
In other big movements, Punjab Kings have released their last edition’s captain Mayank Agarwal, while West Indies skipper Nicholas Pooran was released by Sunrisers Hyderabad, while the Mumbai Indians ended up releasing 13 players.”
“Meanwhile,
Citing a heavy international schedule, Australia’s Test and ODI skipper Pat Cummins has opted to sit out of the next year’s Indian Premier League season for The Kolkata Knight Riders.
Cummins wrote on Twitter, “I’ve made the difficult decision to miss next year’s IPL. The international schedule is packed with Tests and ODI’s for the next 12 months, so will take some rest ahead of an Ashes series and World Cup,”
Cummins has played the last three IPL seasons with Kolkata, and last year notably smashed a 14-ball half-century against Mumbai Indians in Pune, the equal-fastest fifty ever in the competition alongside India’s KL Rahul. Cummins was signed for 15.5 crore rupees in 2019″
“New Zealand has dropped left-arm pacer Trent Boult and opening batter Martin Guptil for the white-ball series against India, starting from November 18.
Earlier in August, Boult was released from his central contract with New Zealand Cricket at his request so he can spend less time travelling and more time at home with his family.
Blackcaps coach Gary Stead said it was never easy leaving out the experience of Boult and Guptill but the team had to keep looking ahead.
Stead admitted, “When Trent opted out of his NZC contract in August, we indicated that priority would be given to those players with either central or domestic contracts, and that’s been the case here.”””
“Let us move on to some football news from the I-League, as Aizawl FC and TRAU FC shared the spoils after a 1-1 draw in their I-League match at the picturesque Rajiv Gandhi Stadium.
A goal in each half by Sagolsem Bikash Singh (18th minute) and K Lalrinfela (48th) for TRAU and Aizawl, respectively, meant that the two sides went home with a point each. In a fixture where TRAU have dominated in recent years, it was a different story this time. The first half started with Aizawl FC on the front foot, as they
played with a high tempo in the opposition’s half.
Kenkre FC is currently on top of the table thanks to a superior goal difference.”
“Cristiano Ronaldo knows a thing or two about World Cups. He has played in four of them and is about to make it to a record-tying fifth this month in Qatar.
Ronaldo also knows when he sees something promising, and he believes this time there is reason to feel optimistic about the chances of a talented Portugal squad that mixes the right amount of experience and youth as it tries to win its first World Cup title.
Ronaldo told The Associated Press, “The squad for this World Cup is a great mix of experienced players and young rising stars, and I hope we can show the world what this Portugal team is capable of at the very highest level of the world game,”
“
“Wolverhampton Wanderers’ new manager Julen Lopetegui is worried about the club’s Mexico striker Raul Jimenez going to the World Cup because he is still recovering from a groin injury that has kept him out of action since August.
Jimenez has only played four matches for Wolves this season but on Monday, November 14, Mexico coach Gerardo Martino included the 31-year-old in his squad for the Nov.20-Dec.18 finals in Qatar.
Lopetegui said on Monday, November 14, in his first news conference as the Midlands club’s coach, “”I spoke with Raul about his situation with Mexico and I am worried about him. He hasn’t played any minute with the Wolves. I am worried because we need Raul fit, in his best version.”””
