Canadians set to get update on military sexual misconduct program

Ottawa –

Defense Minister Anita Anand is expected to update Canadians today on the military’s latest efforts to address sexual misconduct in the military.

The update was provided on Monday, but was delayed by the adjournment of the House of Commons due to the death of former Liberal cabinet minister Jim Carr.

The update comes in direct response to a scathing report issued earlier this year by retired Supreme Court Justice Louise Arbor.

The report made dozens of recommendations to address misconduct and criminal behavior in the military.

That includes calling for the removal of the military’s jurisdiction to investigate and prosecute sex crimes.

Arbour’s report comes after a year-long study that coincided with explosive allegations of sexual misconduct involving some senior military officers.

The Canadian Press report was first published on December 13, 2022.
